Your relationship isn’t broken. Your communication is.
I was watching a dating show the other night.
Boring. Scripted. Except for one thing:
Every single couple was failing the same test.
Not love. Not attraction.
Communication.
One would say “I’m fine” when they meant “I’m drowning.”
The other would hear “leave me alone” when it was “hold me closer.”
And I sat there, thinking:
No wonder you’re a mess. You’re speaking different languages in the same room.
Let me say it straight.
Communication is the foundation of every relationship.
Romance. Family. Friends. Business.
Without it, you don’t have a relationship.
You have two people guessing. And guessing gets exhausting.
In my years as a Wisdom Coach and Counsellor, I’ve seen it again and again.
The couples who make it aren’t the ones who never fight.
They’re the ones who know how to come back to each other after the fight.
Because communication isn’t about talking more.
It’s about being understood. And understanding.
Think of your relationship like a circus.
Unpredictable. Loud. Full of swinging monkeys called misunderstandings.
Open communication is the acrobatic spine that does the somersaults to bridge the gap.
Good communication solves problems and brings you closer.
Poor communication creates problems and pushes you apart.
It’s that simple. So why do we make it so hard?
Here are the 2 pillars I teach every client who walks into my room:
1. BUILD EMPATHY — THE ART OF STEPPING INTO THEIR SHOES
Empathy isn’t “I feel bad for you.”
Empathy is “I see you. I hear you. I get you.”
It has layers:
- Cognitive: I understand your perspective.
- Affective: I feel what you’re feeling.
- Behavioral: I show up for you in a way that proves it.
You don’t need a psychology degree. You need 6 steps:
- Listen to understand, not to reply. No interrupting.
- Step into their world. How would you feel in their shoes?
- Reflect back. “So, what I’m hearing is…”
- Name the feeling. “I see that you’re feeling…”
- Offer support. “How can I help you right now?”
- Check in later. “I’ve been thinking about what you said.”
Do this consistently and watch walls come down.
Because people don’t leave relationships where they feel seen.
2. MAINTAIN HEALTHY BOUNDARIES — THE ART OF LOVING YOURSELF TOO
Boundaries aren’t walls to keep people out.
They’re fences with gates. They tell people: “This is me. This is how to love me well.”
Without boundaries, you get resentment. Clinginess. Co-dependency.
With boundaries, you get respect. Space. Freedom.
Healthy boundaries look like this:
Independence: You don’t outsource your peace to another person.
Clear expectations: “This is okay. This is not okay.” Say it calmly, early.
Self-respect: You walk away from what drains you. You don’t explain your worth.
Comfort first: If something feels off in your body, honor it.
Clear roles: Who does what. No scorekeeping. Just fairness.
Emotional separation: Your feelings are yours. Their feelings are theirs.
Boundaries don’t push people away.
They teach people how to stay.
THE TRUTH NO ONE TELLS YOU
Don’t wait for your relationship to break down to take it to the garage.
You service your car before it breaks. Do the same for your love.
Keep your spirits high. Find the little joys together.
For me? It’s cookies and coffee. For you? Find your thing.
And if you feel the slightest crack forming… don’t wait for rock bottom.
That’s what I’m here for.
My research and experience say one thing:
Relationships don’t fail from lack of love. They fail from lack of skill to communicate.
The skill to speak clearly.
The skill to listen deeply.
The skill to honour yourself and the other person at the same time.
You can learn this.
And you don’t have to learn it alone.
