Mental Health Counseling in the Modern World
Mental health is something that impacts everyone, but sometimes, people ignore it or feel ashamed to talk about it. In today’s busy and always online world, taking care of our mental well-being is super important. This article will look into how mental health is right now, how mental illness affects us, and ways we can keep our mental health in good shape.
Mental health issues like depression and anxiety are becoming more common, with about 1 in 5 adults facing them each year. These conditions can really affect how someone goes about their daily life and can even cause physical health problems.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), depression and anxiety disorders are the leading causes of disability worldwide.
A major hurdle in dealing with mental health is the stigma attached to it. Lots of people hesitate to get help or discuss their mental health difficulties because they worry about what others might think or say. But this mindset needs to shift. Mental health is just as vital as physical health and deserves the same care and attention. It’s time we prioritize it accordingly.
Imagine you have something at home, like a machine or even a car, which starts having problems. You try to make it work by adjusting things and doing small fixes. Maybe you don’t want to get more help because it might cost too much, you’re too busy, or you’re just feeling lazy.
But eventually, the problem gets worse and the machine breaks down completely. When you finally ask for help, the person helping you might wonder why you didn’t come earlier. It could have been easier and cheaper to fix it earlier.
This is like counseling.
People aren’t machines that you can just fix or throw away. We need to work on ourselves actively, and counseling can help with that.
At first, we might think we can handle life’s problems on our own, with prayers, talking to friends, or reading self-help books. Usually, these things work okay. But sometimes, things get really tough, and that’s when counseling can be a lifesaver.
Mental health issues can make life seem really dark and hard. Counseling can help us understand ourselves better and deal with our emotions.
I’m not saying you should only seek counseling when everything seems hopeless. Some people can afford counseling and have access to it whenever they need it, but for many others, it’s not easy to get.
There are lots of things you can do to help your mental health without going to a counselor.
Things like spirituality, yoga, helping others, meditation, staying active with exercise, eating well, getting massages, reading inspiring content, and joining clubs or groups. I could keep going and fill up this whole page, and so could you.
Of course, counseling can be really helpful, too. There are many different ways counselors can help, with many other techniques.
I can’t say one thing is important for everyone’s mental health. It really depends on the person.
“I wish more people would come to me for just one or a few sessions, not necessarily for counseling, but to talk deeply, get some advice, and learn about resources that might help them.”
Counseling could be one option on that list—I’m a counselor myself, so I believe in it, but for some people, other things might be more helpful.
I’m not talking about people with serious mental or emotional problems that really affect their daily lives. For them, counseling might be a good first step, but even then, it’ll be tailored to them and might include some of the things from those long lists of alternatives.
A client I catered to a while ago posed a very significant question for me. He asked if I was someone who would really understand his woes. Particularly because he had high regards as he reviewed the Google for best counselors in Santa Cruz, Mumbai.
But his question was fairly genuine.
Why is it helpful to talk to a counselor who’s been through mental health issues in their personal life or maybe themselves?
I believe that’s what they call a peer specialist. In many segregations of counseling, they’ve seen good results by having people who’ve been through recovery themselves help out. It’s a path into mental health support that’s open even if someone has legal troubles. Clients seem to like it because they connect with someone who gets where they’re coming from.
My situation is a bit different, and I was lucky that nothing in my past stopped me from becoming a provider. What I’m talking about is usually called “use of self,” and it’s a proven method that many providers don’t use because of training, fear, or wanting to protect themselves. But I love using it. What I’ve found is that talking about personal struggles can sometimes reach people in a way that other methods can’t. Its one thing to tell someone to use a skill to deal with their problem, but it’s much more powerful to share how I used self-affirmations and how they changed my life.
That’s the essence of it. Sharing personal experiences can create a special connection between the counselor and the client, like being in the same boat or having a light bulb moment together. And it’s powerful because it shows that recovery and moving forward is totally possible. That’s not something the mental health field talks about much. We often focus on just being safe and okay, but we don’t often dare to talk about how people can actually heal, change, and find happiness
